Auction Bridge and International Bridge (IB) represent a pivotal stage in the evolution of the classic card game Bridge, serving as the bridge—pun intended—between the older Bridge Whist and modern Contract Bridge. As the third phase in this progression, Auction Bridge & IB emerged from the foundations of Whist and Straight Bridge, refining gameplay mechanics while introducing a more dynamic bidding system.
Unlike Contract Bridge, Auction Bridge & IB feature distinct scoring systems that set them apart. Trick scoring, bonus structures, and penalty calculations differ significantly, offering players a unique strategic experience. Notably, the concept of "vulnerability"—a core element in Contract Bridge—is absent in Auction Bridge & IB, simplifying certain aspects of play.
The process of selecting trumps is largely similar to Contract Bridge, though slightly less complex. The dealer initiates the bidding and must commit to winning at least the seventh trick (the "odd trick") when declaring a trump suit or No-trumps. Bids are ranked not solely by the number of tricks but by their point value, disregarding doubles. For example, a bid of 3 Spades (worth 27 points) outranks 4 Clubs (24 points), even though the latter requires more tricks.
Trick values above the six-trick book are as follows:
- No-trumps: 10 points per trick
- Spades: 9 points per trick
- Hearts: 8 points per trick
- Diamonds: 7 points per trick
- Clubs: 6 points per trick
Reaching a total of 30 points constitutes a game.
