Since Fields of Mistria entered Steam Early Access, the Deep Woods has been tantalizingly marked on the town map, yet remained inaccessible—until the March 2025 update! This guide reveals how to unlock this new area and find Caldarus.
How To Unlock the Deep Woods in Fields of Mistria
Unlocking the Deep Woods requires breaking the Fire Seal and utilizing the newly acquired Dragon's Breath spell to clear the obstructing vines. To break the seal, you must place four specific items on the Priestess' altar (Floor 60 of the mines): a Faceted Rock Gem, a Rockroot, an Emerald, and a Sealing Scroll. The first three items are found between floors 50 and 59. However, obtaining the Sealing Scroll requires a quest involving Juniper and Balor.
To get the scroll, leave these items in the bin near Balor's wagon: 10 Silver Ingots, 10 Rubies, 10 Sapphires, and 10 Emeralds. Afterward, speak with Balor; he'll deliver the scroll the next day. Once the offering is complete, prepare for an unexpected twist.
Breaking the seal doesn't go as planned. The Priestess urges you to flee before the scroll fully seals you within the mines. Your health depleted, you cry out for help, and Caldarus appears in human form, retreating to his temple in the Deep Woods to recover. He then tasks you with finding him there, granting you the Dragon's Breath spell.
This spell not only clears the Deep Woods entrance but also opens other previously blocked areas. Equip it from the pause menu and activate it while facing the entrance to permanently unlock the path.
How To Find Caldarus
After breaking the Fire Seal, Caldarus awaits within his temple in the Deep Woods, located north of the Eastern Road. You'll need Dragon's Breath to access it. His location is clearly marked on your map. He resides in the northeast corner of the area.
To reach him, proceed through the entrance, chop down a blocking stump with your axe, and head north to the temple.
Once unlocked, use the Dragon Statue on your farm for convenient (10 Essence) fast travel to the Deep Woods, enabling easy visits to Caldarus. You can still interact with him spiritually through his statue.
