Author : Layla Feb 01,2025

Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's over, but the gaming continues! This week brings a bounty of reviews, fresh releases, and some enticing sales. Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch continues to deliver second chances at classic games. This collection brings us the previously unlocalized Ace Attorney titles starring Miles Edgeworth. The sequel significantly builds upon the first, creating a satisfying whole. While the pacing can feel uneven at times, fans of the main series will find much to enjoy. Edgeworth's perspective offers a fresh take on the familiar formula.

Bonus features include a gallery, story mode, graphical/soundtrack options, and a helpful dialogue history. The collection is a well-rounded package, making it a must-have for Ace Attorney enthusiasts. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney game is now available on Switch.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to the obscure NES classic Gimmick!? It's a delightful surprise! Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel delivers six challenging levels of physics-based platforming. While retaining the original's difficulty, an easier mode is included for those seeking a less punishing experience. The familiar star mechanic returns, serving as both weapon and puzzle-solving tool. New collectibles unlock customization options.

Expect a tough but rewarding experience. Generous checkpoints mitigate frustration, while charming visuals and music add to the appeal. Gimmick! 2 successfully balances homage to the original with its own identity. Highly recommended for fans of challenging platformers.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

A bold departure from the original Valfaris, Mecha Therion shifts to a shoot 'em up style. While the Switch's performance might not be perfect, the intense action, memorable soundtrack, and striking visuals still shine. The weapon system, featuring a main gun, melee weapon, and rotating third weapon, creates a satisfying gameplay loop. Mastering weapon management and the dash mechanic is key to success.

While different from its predecessor, Mecha Therion maintains the original's distinct atmosphere. It's a stylish and engaging shoot 'em up, despite some performance limitations on the Switch.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

A licensed game catering primarily to fans of the Umamusume franchise. The game excels in its presentation and fan service, offering a solid recreation of the series' world and characters. However, the limited number of repetitive mini-games may leave non-fans wanting more. While fans will appreciate the extensive unlockables, the overall gameplay lacks depth.

Even for fans, the focus on fan service might overshadow the limited gameplay. A good effort in terms of presentation, but ultimately falls short in providing lasting entertainment.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft's library, featuring three charming 8-bit titles. Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola are all fully localized for the first time. The package includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries.

The games offer a varied experience, with some frustrating elements in 53 Stations, a solid adventure in Ripple Island, and an ambitious but uneven The Wing of Madoola. While not groundbreaking, they offer a unique glimpse into Sunsoft's history and are recommended for retro enthusiasts.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
