Assassin's Creed Shadows: A Revamped Parkour System and Dual Protagonists

Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated feudal Japan adventure, is set to launch February 14th, bringing significant changes to the franchise's iconic parkour mechanics and introducing a unique dual protagonist system.

A Refined Parkour Experience:

The game's parkour system has undergone a major overhaul. Instead of free-climbing any surface, players will navigate designated "parkour highways," strategically placed climbing routes. While this may initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable surfaces remain accessible, requiring a more considered approach. This design choice allows for more control over level design and character movement, particularly differentiating the abilities of the two protagonists. The addition of seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish flips and dives, enhances fluidity and visual appeal. A new prone position also enables sprinting dives and slides, adding further dynamism to movement.

Dual Protagonists, Divergent Playstyles:

Shadows features two playable characters with distinct skill sets: Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at scaling walls and navigating shadows; and Yasuke, a powerful samurai specializing in open combat but limited in climbing abilities. This dual-protagonist structure caters to both fans of classic Assassin's Creed stealth and the more action-oriented RPG combat introduced in titles like Odyssey and Valhalla. The redesigned parkour system, with its emphasis on defined pathways, further accentuates these contrasting playstyles.

A Packed February Release Window:

Launching on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 14th, Assassin's Creed Shadows faces stiff competition from other high-profile releases. The coming weeks will undoubtedly reveal more details about this ambitious title as its release date approaches. Ubisoft's commitment to refining parkour while introducing a compelling dual-protagonist system positions Shadows for a potentially significant impact in the gaming landscape.
