Assassin's Creed Shadows, slated for release on March 20, 2025, has suffered a significant leak. Gameplay footage and images surfaced online via social media and auction sites, a month ahead of schedule. While these posts and streams have since been removed, the damage is done, exposing significant portions of the game. The leak reportedly involved copies sold on online marketplaces for $100 each.
Ubisoft, facing considerable challenges with the title's development and marketing, has previously stated that pre-orders are strong, comparable to Assassin's Creed Odyssey. CEO Yves Guillemot emphasized positive early previews, highlighting the narrative, immersive experience, and dual protagonist approach. He commended the team's dedication to delivering the franchise's most ambitious installment.
The game's journey to release has been fraught with delays. Initially planned for November, it was postponed to February 14th, and then again to its current March 20th release date. The pressure on Assassin's Creed Shadows is immense, as it's the first full Assassin's Creed game since 2020, the long-awaited Japan-set entry, and a crucial title for a struggling Ubisoft facing investor concerns and recent game underperformance.
The promotional period hasn't been smooth. The developers apologized for historical inaccuracies in the game's depiction of Japan and for unauthorized use of a historical recreation group's flag. Further controversy arose when PureArts pulled an "insensitive" Assassin's Creed Shadows statue from sale.
