In *Monster Hunter Wilds*, the beasts you encounter are not just challenging but also unforgettable. Among these, Rompopolo stands out as a particularly unique Brute Wyvern-type monster. To help you conquer this formidable foe, here's a comprehensive guide on how to unlock, defeat, and capture it.
How to Unlock Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds
You'll first encounter Rompopolo in Chapter 2 during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. As you journey through the Oilwell Basin region towards Azuz City, Rompopolo will make its dramatic entrance, and you must defeat it to progress further in the game.
Once you've defeated Rompopolo at least once, its entry will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide. You can then engage it multiple times either by exploring the Oilwell Basin or by starting the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent.
How to Beat and Capture Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds
To prepare effectively for battling Rompopolo, equip your hunter with water-element weapons, which you can obtain from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Additionally, gear up with fire-resistant equipment, which you can farm from Uth Duna or Ajarakan later in the chapter. Consider crafting fire-resistance Talismans like the Fire Charm I or Defense Charm I for added protection. Before the fight, don't forget to boost your health and stamina by grilling a meal.
Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses
Rompopolo's unique design includes saggy skin that fills with gas, enabling it to unleash a variety of gas-related attacks, including explosive ones. It can also inflict poison, so carry Antidotes and leverage your Palico's ability to cleanse ailments.
Be vigilant of the following key attacks:
- Arm Swipe – Rompopolo uses its clawed arms to swipe forward twice. This attack is easy to dodge due to its limited range.
- Lunge With Arm Swipe – It charges forward while raising its arms for an arcing swipe attack.
- Tail Swing – Rompopolo swings its tail towards its target, another physical attack to watch out for.
- Poison Stream or Swipe – It sprays a stream of poison gas or charges while swinging its head, spreading poison.
- Oil Explosion – From a distance, Rompopolo injects gas into oil pools, causing them to explode. Dodge these eruptions.
- Charged Oil Explosion – Later in the fight, it curls its tail to pump more gas into the oil, resulting in a larger explosion. Dodge to avoid significant damage.
Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?
As with previous *Monster Hunter* games, you have the option to either capture or kill Rompopolo at the end of the battle. To capture, you must first weaken it until your Palico indicates it's "tired." Then, use Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps to ensnare it, followed by at least one Tranq Bomb to complete the capture.
Both capturing and killing yield viable rewards, though the item drops may vary slightly. Some items are exclusive to capture, while others are obtained through killing. Here are the potential item drops from Rompopolo:
