Capcom's Revival of Classic IPs Continues: Okami and Onimusha Lead the Charge
Capcom has announced its continued focus on reviving classic intellectual properties (IPs), with the Onimusha and Okami franchises spearheading this initiative. This commitment to revisiting beloved series was revealed in a December 13th press release alongside the announcements of new entries in both franchises.
The new Onimusha title, set in Edo-period Kyoto, is slated for a 2026 release. A new Okami sequel is also in development, helmed by the original game's directors and development team, though its release date remains undisclosed.
Capcom explicitly stated its intention to "re-activate dormant IPs," leveraging its extensive library to create "highly efficient, high-quality titles." This strategy complements ongoing projects like Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2, both anticipated for 2025, demonstrating a commitment to both new and revived properties. Recent releases such as Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal further highlight Capcom's diverse development pipeline.
Clues to Future Revivals: The "Super Elections"
Capcom's February 2024 "Super Elections," a fan vote for desired sequels and remakes, offers potential insights into future projects. The results revealed strong demand for titles like Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, and Breath of Fire, alongside the already-announced Onimusha and Okami. Given the long dormancy of Dino Crisis (last installment: 1997) and Darkstalkers (last installment: 2003), and the short lifespan of Breath of Fire 6 (2016-2017), these franchises are prime candidates for revival.
While Capcom remains discreet about its future plans, the "Super Elections" results strongly suggest that these dormant IPs are under consideration for future remasters or sequels. The company's clear commitment to revitalizing its classic catalog promises exciting developments for fans in the years to come.
