Skateboarding Returns: Console Playtesting for the Highly Anticipated "skate." Begins
Exciting news for console gamers! The long-awaited "skate." title, the latest installment in the popular Skate franchise, is now available for playtesting on Xbox and PlayStation consoles. While PC players have been involved in testing since mid-2022, this marks the first opportunity for Xbox and PlayStation users to experience a new Skate game in over 15 years.
The last mainline Skate game, Skate 3, launched in 2010. Despite a dedicated fanbase, EA seemingly shelved the franchise for an extended period. However, persistent fan support, notably the #Skate4 hashtag, ultimately led to the creation of a dedicated development studio and the announcement of a new game. Last fall, "skate." was slated for early access in 2025, and this console playtest represents significant progress towards that release.
Via the official "skate." Twitter account, Xbox and PlayStation players can now participate in the playtest through the "skate." Insider program (registration required). A recent video featuring developers briefly addressed fan questions, confirming expanded Black hairstyle options and playfully acknowledging the initially announced "Fall 2024" playtest timeframe.
EA has confirmed "skate." as a free-to-play, live-service game. Details remain limited, but the skateboarding simulator is set in the fictional city of San Vansterdam, a work-in-progress inspired by San Vanelona, Port Carverton, and real-world locations. While a map version leaked in 2023, it's likely undergone significant changes. Fans can register for the playtest or patiently await the game's wider release.
Other Skateboarding Options in the Interim
While the early access launch is targeted for 2025, delays are always a possibility. Fortunately, several other skateboarding games are available to keep fans entertained until "skate." officially arrives.
