Magic: The Gathering's highly anticipated Final Fantasy crossover is almost here! Launching this June, this collaboration features four preconstructed Commander decks, each themed around a different mainline Final Fantasy game: 6, 7, 10, and 14. Each deck boasts 100 cards, a mix of reprints with new Final Fantasy art and brand-new cards designed specifically for Commander.

The game selection was carefully considered, balancing gameplay desires with the popularity of each game's story. While Final Fantasy VII and XIV were easy choices, Final Fantasy VI and X were selected due to team favorites and extensive lore. The development team, filled with passionate Final Fantasy fans, ensured a high level of dedication throughout the process.

The Final Fantasy VII deck captures the original game's narrative while leveraging the modern aesthetics of the Remake trilogy to enhance character designs and locations. Final Fantasy VI, relying on pixel art sprites and limited concept art, saw collaboration with the original game's team to bring its characters to life in the Magic art style.

Commander deck leaders were also thoughtfully chosen. While Cloud for VII was obvious, the other selections involved deliberation. Terra (FFVI), Tidus (FFX), and Y'shtola (FFXIV during her Shadowbringers arc) were ultimately selected for their popularity and alignment with deck strategies.

Each deck's color identity and gameplay were carefully designed. All four decks include White, facilitating the inclusion of a wide range of heroes. FFVI focuses on graveyard strategies, FFVII on equipment and "power matters" cards, FFX on creature empowerment mirroring the Sphere Grid, and FFXIV on non-creature spellcasting.

Beyond the main characters, the decks feature numerous beloved Final Fantasy characters, both heroes and villains, as legendary creatures and spell components. While specifics remain under wraps, fans can expect to see many familiar faces.

The set also includes a fully draftable, Standard-legal set. Both regular and Collector's Edition versions of the Commander decks will be available (MSRP $69.99 and $149.99 respectively), with the latter featuring Surge foil treatment for all 100 cards. The release date is June 13th. And don't worry if your favorite game isn't represented in these four decks – all sixteen mainline Final Fantasy games will have their moment in the spotlight across the full product line.
