Understanding the Character System

Unlike games with rigid class systems, Fortnite offers a vast array of cosmetic items—skins—to alter your character's look. These skins are purely aesthetic; they don't impact gameplay but allow for self-expression and stand out from other players. This is especially true for skins from collaborations with franchises like Marvel or Star Wars.

How to Change Your Character in Fortnite

Modifying your character's appearance is straightforward:

1. Open the "Locker": Navigate to the "Locker" tab at the top of the screen. This houses all your cosmetic items: skins, pickaxes, wraps, etc.
2. Select a Skin: Click the first slot (leftmost) in the "Locker" to access your skins. Browse and choose your desired skin.
3. Choose a Style (if applicable): Many skins offer style variations, altering colors or the entire look. Select your preferred style.
4. Apply the Skin: Click "Save and Exit" (or close the menu). Your character will now sport the new skin.

If you haven't purchased any skins, a random default skin will be assigned. A late 2024 update allows you to select a preferred default skin directly within the "Locker."

Changing Gender

Your character's gender is determined by the selected skin. Each skin has a predefined gender, not changeable unless style variations within the skin offer an option. To play as a specific gender, choose an appropriate skin. Follow the steps above; if you lack a suitable skin, purchase one from the Item Shop using V-Bucks. The Item Shop updates daily, offering various male and female character skins.

Acquiring New Items

Expand your cosmetic collection through:

• Item Shop: The daily-updated shop offers skins and other cosmetic items for purchase using V-Bucks.
• Battle Pass: Purchasing a Battle Pass unlocks exclusive skins and rewards as you level up throughout the season.
• Events and Promotions: Fortnite frequently hosts events and promotions offering unique skins through challenges or competitions.

Footwear

Introduced in November 2024, "Kicks" allow you to equip stylish footwear from real-world brands (like Nike) or Fortnite-exclusive designs. In the "Locker," select shoes compatible with your outfit. Note: Not all outfits support shoe customization, but this is being expanded. Use the "Shoe Preview" function before purchasing to check compatibility.

Using Other Cosmetic Items
