George R.R. Martin, the acclaimed author of A Song of Ice and Fire, has expressed his enthusiastic approval of the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. In a recent blog post, Martin revealed that he's viewed all six episodes and considers the series a remarkably faithful adaptation of his "Dunk and Egg" novellas.
He confirmed the show's completion at HBO and its anticipated release later this year, possibly in the fall. Unlike his previous involvement with House of the Dragon, Martin stated that he is particularly fond of this adaptation, praising the casting and performances of Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall ("Dunk") and Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon Targaryen ("Egg"). He also highlighted the compelling characters of the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall.
Martin emphasized that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on The Hedge Knight, prioritizes character development over large-scale action sequences. While a significant fight scene is included, the series eschews dragons, major battles, and White Walkers, focusing instead on themes of duty, honor, and chivalry.
Though the release date remains several months away, HBO has already unveiled promotional images and a short teaser trailer. Martin concluded his post with a humorous acknowledgment of his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter and the future installments of the Dunk and Egg stories, promising to eventually tackle "The Sworn Sword" and beyond.
