Ghost of Yōtei introduces a brand-new series feature where players can revisit the past and relive protagonist Atsu's experiences at specific map locations, all made possible by PlayStation 5's advanced architecture. In a July 17 interview with Game Informer, Sucker Punch directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell discussed their experience developing for Sony's latest console.

This new "memory feature" allows players to delve deeper into Atsu's history, creating a stronger bond with the character. Fox elaborated, "We aimed to give players the freedom to move between timelines and experience gameplay from Atsu's childhood, helping them understand and empathize with her feelings of loss after her parents were taken."

Leveraging the PS5's power, Sucker Punch can seamlessly render both past and present environments simultaneously, ensuring uninterrupted gameplay. Fox noted, "The PlayStation 5 is the reason we can transition back and forth so fluidly. It's a significant technical achievement to run both versions concurrently."

Beyond the memory mechanic, the team dramatically improved the game's environmental visuals, a notable challenge given the original Tsushima's acclaimed beauty. Connell explained, "View distances are vastly extended, making mountains feel truly distant. The team excelled at creating an epic, expansive scale. We've enhanced terrain tessellation and implemented higher-fidelity rendering for distant landscapes."

He added that a future video or trailer will detail all the graphical upgrades. Sucker Punch is committed to showcasing these enhancements to emphasize the Ghost series' signature photorealistic style.

Connell further elaborated, "The Ghost series has a distinct visual style that's crucial. It's not purely photorealistic, though that's a component. We're advancing that style and developing features that support our overarching visual, aesthetic, emotional, and tonal objectives."

Harnessing the Full Potential of the PS5 and DualSense Controller

The Ghost franchise is a cornerstone of Sony's gaming portfolio, and Sucker Punch credits the company's hardware for enabling these technological leaps. Building on Tsushima's stunning world, the studio later released a PS5 version that further elevated its visual fidelity.

Fox remarked, "Developing Ghost of Tsushima for PS4 and then swiftly seeing it enhanced on PS5 was an incredible journey." Beyond the console, he highlighted how the DualSense controller offers new ways to experience Yōtei.

"The PlayStation 5 is, of course, a phenomenal machine, but let's be honest, this controller is magnificent. The haptic feedback is superb, and the touchpad integration is excellent. Ghost of Yōtei was built from the ground up for the PS5 to leverage its near-instant loading and to maximize every capability of the DualSense controller," Fox stated.

Furthermore, Yōtei is Sucker Punch's first title developed exclusively for the PS5, and the team was determined to push the hardware and controller to make the game feel truly alive. Fox said, "This game simply wouldn't be possible without the PS5's unique features. We're thrilled to be developing a title designed exclusively for this platform and its controller."

Yōtei will also be released on the PS5 Pro, though Sucker Punch has not yet detailed that version. Ghost of Yōtei launches on October 2, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5. For the latest updates on the game, explore our related article below!
