Nintendo has offered our first official look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, arriving ahead of the console’s launch next month.
A new video from the company’s Nintendo Today app highlights the official Switch 2 carrying case, which includes slots to securely hold up to six Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 game cartridges.
As previously known, Switch 2 cartridges share the exact size and shape as those for the original Switch — meaning the Switch 2 system requires only one slot to play titles from both console generations. However, one notable difference stands out: the color of the cartridge.
Switch 2 cartridges feature a red design — a universal choice, not limited to the Mario Kart World cartridge shown in Nintendo’s video. (If you don’t have the Nintendo Today app, you can watch the clip posted by OatmealDome on X / Twitter below.)
The top of each cartridge’s printed sticker also displays a new Switch 2 logo, replacing the original Nintendo Switch branding.

Here’s a look inside the official Switch 2 carrying case. It has room for the console with the Joy-Con 2 attached, six cartridges, and two Joy-Con 2 straps.

Apart from these changes, Switch 2 cartridges remain identical in other regards, including the unpleasant coating Nintendo applies to deter people from putting them in their mouth.
"We want to ensure no one faces any risk of accidental ingestion," Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta previously told GameSpot. "We’ve designed it so that if it goes into your mouth, you’ll instinctively spit it out."

The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to launch on June 5, 2025 — just three weeks from now. Earlier today, a report also indicated that Nintendo’s key electronics partner Samsung is already considering a future Switch 2 hardware refresh featuring an OLED screen upgrade.
