Warner Bros. and HBO have officially unveiled the first six cast members who will bring fresh interpretations to the iconic Hogwarts professors in the much-anticipated Harry Potter series. Following months of speculation and fan theories about the retelling of Harry, Hermione, and Ron's adventures, the casting announcement offers a thrilling glimpse into the project.
Leading the cast is John Lithgow, renowned for his roles in Conclave and Dexter, who will take on the role of Albus Dumbledore. Lithgow had previously hinted at his involvement, expressing the weight of the role and its impact on his career. "I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it's going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I'm afraid," he shared with ScreenRant in February. "But I'm very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That's why it's been such a hard decision. I'll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I've said yes."
Joining him are some familiar faces and talents that have been rumored for months. Nick Frost, known for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, will embody the beloved Rubeus Hagrid, while Paapa Essiedu, acclaimed for his performances in I May Destroy You and Black Mirror, will portray the complex Severus Snape.
Completing the initial ensemble are Janet McTeer, who will step into the shoes of Minerva McGonagall, famous for her roles in Me Before You and The Menu; Luke Thallon, set to play Quirinus Quirrell, known from The Favourite and Present Laughter; and Paul Whitehouse, who will bring Argus Filch to life, recognized for his work in The Fast Show and Alice Through the Looking Glass.

Showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner, alongside director and executive producer Mark Mylod, expressed their excitement about the cast in a statement: "We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life."
The announced professors—Dumbledore, Hagrid, and Snape—are not only central to the Harry Potter universe but also significant figures in pop culture. Each actor faces the challenge of stepping into roles that have been portrayed memorably in the past.
While the Harry Potter series has yet to announce a release date, filming is expected to commence soon. Details on how the series will diverge from the original novels and the earlier film adaptations remain under wraps. However, Warner Bros. has assured fans that the show will explore Harry's story "a little bit more in depth than you can in just a two-hour film." Notably, controversial author J.K. Rowling is involved in the show's development.
