Simu Liu, the Marvel star, is spearheading efforts to revive the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu's response to a fan on X/Twitter, confirming his pursuit of securing the rights to bring the 2012 video game to the big screen. He stated, "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen."
The project, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, vanished a year later. Yen recently confirmed its cancellation, citing years of invested time, effort, and personal funds, only to see the project ultimately fail to materialize due to the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
Liu's intervention reignites hope for the Hong Kong-set action franchise. However, the success of his endeavor in securing the rights or otherwise propelling the film forward remains uncertain.
The original Sleeping Dogs game, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows Detective Wei Shen as he undertakes an undercover operation within a formidable Hong Kong Triad. Critically acclaimed, earning an 8/10 rating from IGN, the game, despite its popularity, never received a sequel.
