Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Reports
Despite recent reports, Chris Evans, the star of Captain America, has definitively stated that he will not be reprising his role in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.
This denial contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who previously stated his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie later confirmed that Evans himself denied this in a recent conversation, stating he is "happily retired."
Evans' statement to Esquire firmly shuts down the recurring rumors: "That’s not true, though...This always happens...ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no. Happily retired."
While Evans has made a cameo appearance as Johnny Storm (his character from the Fox franchise) in Deadpool & Wolverine, this was a significantly smaller role than his prominent Captain America arc.
The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors (Kang) from the franchise due to assault and harassment charges. Majors' planned role as the MCU's next major villain has been replaced by Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., sparking speculation about the return of other original Avengers, though nothing beyond Downey Jr.'s casting has been officially confirmed.
Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) confirmed his absence from Avengers: Doomsday but will have a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also rumored to appear.
