Gears of War: E-Day was notably absent from today's Xbox Games Showcase 2025, leaving fans of Microsoft's flagship franchises wanting more. The event showed little representation from major Xbox series like Forza, Halo, or the anticipated Fable reboot.
Xbox chief Phil Spencer reassured audiences that 2026 will mark the arrival of both Gears of War: E-Day and the next Forza installment, coinciding with Xbox's 25th anniversary celebration.
Originally announced at Xbox Games Showcase 2024, this prequel entry in the Gears of War saga transports players 14 years before the events of the original game, serving as an origin story for franchise icons Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. The beloved characters will once again be voiced by original actors John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro.
"Gears of War: E-Day represents more than our next major release - it's a homecoming to the core elements that define the Gears experience," stated The Coalition studio head Mike Crump in earlier comments.
Development responsibilities for E-Day are shared between Xbox's in-house team The Coalition and People Can Fly, known for their work on Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgment, as announced earlier this year.
The showcase did offer a tantalizing hint from Spencer regarding Halo's future, potentially including a remaster of the franchise's groundbreaking first entry. For complete coverage, see our breakdown of all announcements from June 2025's Xbox Games Showcase.
