You should never underestimate the dedication of modders. Elden Ring Nightreign is now available, and within just one day of its release, a prominent FromSoftware modder has already showcased a Duos mode modification.
Luke Yui, the creator behind popular co-op mods for games such as Elden Ring and Armored Core VI, posted a brief video to their YouTube channel yesterday. It features a two-player mod for Elden Ring Nightreign, enabling two Nightfarers to partner up instead of being restricted to solo or three-player groups.
It's crucial to note that, currently, this is not a publicly available or playable mod, but rather a proof-of-concept demonstration from Yui. They mentioned the mod operates without connecting to the official matchmaking servers. This means you can use other mods while playing, but you're bypassing the standard game systems. Whether this becomes a practical solution or remains a technical showcase is yet to be seen.
Although Elden Ring Nightreign supports solo play and three-player teams, there's no native option for two-player co-op. Your choices are either to play alone or use matchmaking to find a third player. This might seem like a minor inconvenience, but for players who prefer to team up with just one friend, it can be a significant frustration.
This has become a common complaint in the early reception of Nightreign. The absence of a duos mode has been mentioned in many critical reviews, with players expressing difficulty with this limitation. As one user on the Elden Ring subreddit observed, the Nightreign-specific subreddit resembles "a recruitment board for threesomes" due to the volume of players seeking one more teammate.
In an interview with IGN, Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki acknowledged the team "overlooked and neglected the duos aspect," but confirmed the development team is evaluating the possibility of adding this feature in a post-launch update. Given the strong player demand for a dedicated duos mode, it would be difficult for them to ignore.
