Reviews & Mini-Views

EGGCONSOLE Star Trader PC-8801mkIIsr ($6.49)

This untranslated EGGCONSOLE release presents a familiar dilemma: is the game enjoyable despite the language barrier? Star Trader, a blend of Japanese adventure game and side-scrolling shooter, is intriguing but not outstanding. The adventure elements boast appealing artwork, and the unique fusion of genres is noteworthy. Players engage in conversations, accept quests, and earn money to upgrade their ship, crucial for navigating the challenging shooting stages.

However, the shooting sections suffer from the PC-8801's limitations, resulting in jerky scrolling. The gameplay integration feels uneven. While Star Trader offers some historical interest, its enjoyment is significantly hampered by the abundance of Japanese text. Without understanding the language, players miss crucial plot points and struggle to progress. While some brute-forcing is possible, the overall experience is less than ideal.

Star Trader offers a glimpse into a developer's unconventional work, but its heavy reliance on Japanese text makes it difficult to wholeheartedly recommend.

Crypt Custodian ($19.99)

This top-down action-adventure game follows Pluto, a recently deceased cat, on a cleaning quest after being banished from the afterlife. Explore, battle enemies with your broom, and encounter quirky characters. It's a familiar formula, but executed well. Fans of the genre should definitely check it out.
