The Nintendo Switch 2 requires a day-one update to unlock core system features, including the ability to play games from the original Nintendo Switch.
The new console is now available in regions where it's already June 5, 2025, and Nintendo has made the launch-day update available for download.
You must download this update to play a wide range of Switch 2 titles, including original Switch games, online-only titles, Virtual Game Cards, and physical software that requires an additional download.
Fans anticipated this requirement, as early users reported needing a substantial patch for the console to function properly ahead of launch.
While most owners should download the update without issue, it's important to know if you want to start playing immediately.
Why the day-one update? Nintendo was likely finalizing the Switch 2 firmware while manufacturing launch units months ago.
Furthermore, Nintendo aimed to keep console details under wraps, even as some early units appeared. Making the update available only at launch helped limit early glimpses of gameplay and system features.
It's still surprising, however, to see the Switch 2 patch notes confirm that the console can now actually... play games.
