Nintendo Switch Unveils Top GBA & NDS Games

Author : Anthony Jan 25,2025

A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles now available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While the Switch Online app boasts a robust GBA library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. We've chosen ten favorites – four GBA and six DS – presented without ranking. Let's dive in!

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA version is a solid contender. A fun comparison piece, and a more streamlined experience for some. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, even appealing to those who aren't typically drawn to shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Included in Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series on home consoles faltered, the Mega Man legacy found a worthy successor on the GBA. Mega Man Zero begins an excellent series of side-scrolling action titles, though its initial entry isn't perfectly polished. Subsequent games refine the formula, but this is the ideal starting point.

Mega Man Battle Network – Included in Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A Mega Man double-feature is justified here, as Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer vastly different, yet equally compelling gameplay. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries show diminishing returns, the original remains highly entertaining.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

Another collection where playing all titles is recommended, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it's even preferable to the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on occasion. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes grinding enjoyable. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal. A top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae enjoyed cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare broadened its audience significantly, establishing Shantae as a console staple. Its origins trace back to an unreleased GBA title, which is slated for release soon and might warrant future inclusion on this list.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Included in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA game (its origin), this could be considered a GBA title. Regardless, Ace Attorney needs no introduction. These adventure games blend investigations with dramatic courtroom sequences. The humor is lighthearted, yet the stories are compelling. The first game is exceptional, though later installments also hold merit.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick shares the same high writing quality, but with unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of your death. A captivating and highly recommended experience.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. While ports exist, none fully capture the original's essence. However, the Switch version is a viable alternative if you lack access to a DS, and it's a game worth playing on any platform.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all Nintendo DS Castlevania games. All are worthwhile, but Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the button controls replacing touch controls. However, all three DS titles in this collection are highly recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Included in Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise that translates somewhat imperfectly outside the DS/3DS ecosystem. Atlus's effort is commendable, resulting in a playable experience. Each Etrian Odyssey game is substantial, and Etrian Odyssey III, the largest, is a rewarding RPG despite its quirks.

This concludes our list. Share your favorite GBA and DS games on the Switch in the comments below! Your opinions are always valued. Thanks for reading!
