Disney has officially revealed that Walt Disney World’s upcoming Cars-themed land will be named Piston Peak National Park, marking the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history.
According to the Disney Parks Blog, construction begins this summer, leading to the temporary closure of Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat starting July 7.
A Frontierland Transformation Inspired by Nature
The new expansion reimagines Frontierland with an immersive wilderness setting featuring pine forests, snow-capped peaks, cascading waterfalls, vibrant rivers, and dramatic geysers. While fictional, Piston Peak draws inspiration from Rocky Mountain landscapes and America’s national parks.
The land will integrate iconic locales from Disney•Pixar’s Cars universe, including a rustic lodge, Ranger Station, and scenic trails. Disney Imagineers are employing "Parkitecture" – an architectural style pioneered by the National Park Service to blend structures seamlessly with nature.
Strategic landscaping will create natural transitions between Piston Peak and adjacent areas, with rugged peaks rising near Grizzly Hall and geothermal features from Big Thunder Mountain Railroad extending into off-road rally paths.

First announced at D23 2024, the land will feature two original attractions. The headliner offers a thrilling rally race through mountainous terrain where guests navigate trails, avoid erupting geysers, and splash through mud pits - all while experiencing high-speed adventure. A second family-friendly attraction promises fun for all ages.
At SXSW 2025, Disney previewed innovative ride vehicles designed to capture the personality and movement of Cars characters, with each boasting unique names and identities for enhanced immersion.
Piston Peak forms part of Magic Kingdom’s multi-phase expansion, eventually connecting to the park’s first-ever Villains-themed land. Meanwhile, guests can anticipate this summer’s debut of the Disney Starlight nighttime parade (beginning July 20) and The Beak and Barrel, a new Pirates of the Caribbean-themed tavern.
