Pokémon Go Director Explains Why Fans Shouldn't Worry About Scopely

Author : Benjamin May 13,2025

After the acquisition of Pokémon Go developer Niantic by Scopely, the team behind Monopoly Go, fans have expressed concerns over various issues, including increased ads and data privacy. However, a recent interview with Michael Steranka, a product director at Niantic, published on Polygon, aims to alleviate these worries.

In the interview, Steranka praised Scopely and highlighted the alignment in vision between Niantic and the Monopoly Go developer. He confidently stated that intrusive ads would not be introduced into Pokémon Go under Scopely's ownership. Furthermore, Steranka assured players that Niantic would never share or sell player data to third parties, emphasizing the commitment to privacy. He concluded by affirming that the transition to working under Scopely would minimally impact Niantic's operations, if at all.

ytIf it ain't broke...While some corporate influence might be expected, I believe Scopely will not heavily interfere with Pokémon Go's operations. The game has been, and continues to be, highly successful. A more significant development might be Niantic's new spin-off team, which is focusing on expanding augmented reality applications.

Steranka also pointed out the close involvement of The Pokémon Company in decision-making for Pokémon Go, suggesting that any actions not aligned with their standards would be off the table both now and in the future.
