Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 5 Are Still Selling Very Well

Summary

  • Both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 continue to sell incredibly well years after release.
  • Grand Theft Auto 5 was ranked as the third highest-selling title for the PS5 in both the US/Canada and Europe in December 2024.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 was the highest-selling PS4 game in the United States and came in second in the EU during the same month.

Rockstar Games has consistently delivered some of the most acclaimed open-world experiences with the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series. Their latest entries, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, continue to showcase the studio's commitment to quality and are still dominating sales charts years after their initial release.

Grand Theft Auto 5, launched in 2013, immerses players in the lives of three protagonists navigating the sprawling, chaotic city of Los Santos. Initially a blockbuster, its success has been amplified through multiple platform re-releases and the wildly popular online multiplayer mode, cementing its place as one of the best-selling pieces of entertainment media ever. On the other hand, Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, offers players a rich exploration of the Old West through the eyes of outlaw Arthur Morgan, achieving both critical acclaim and commercial success.

Despite being nearly 12 years old for GTA 5 and almost 7 years old for Red Dead Redemption 2, both titles are still performing exceptionally well. According to PlayStation's December 2024 download charts, GTA 5 secured the third position among the highest-selling titles for the PS5 in both the US/Canada and Europe, while also ranking fifth for the PS4 in these regions. Red Dead Redemption 2, meanwhile, topped the PS4 sales in the United States and came in second in the EU, only being surpassed by EA Sports FC 25.

GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 Are Still Topping PlayStation Sales Charts

The European 2024 GSD figures, as reported by VGC, highlight that Grand Theft Auto 5 was the fourth best-selling game of the year, improving from its fifth-place position in 2023. Red Dead Redemption 2 also climbed the charts, moving up to seventh place from eighth the previous year. These impressive sales figures underscore the enduring appeal of Rockstar's titles. Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, recently announced that Grand Theft Auto 5 has surpassed 205 million units sold, while Red Dead Redemption 2 has reached over 67 million copies sold.

The sustained success of these titles not only reflects the lasting impact of Rockstar's games but also fuels anticipation for future releases. Fans eagerly await the much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, expected to launch later this year, and there are rumors that Red Dead Redemption 2 might be ported to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console.
