Sony WH1000XM5 Review by Kevin Lee**
"The Sony WH-1000XM5 is the major upgrade we’ve been waiting for from Sony’s flagship wireless headphones. The new design and AI-powered noise cancellation deliver stronger performance, while the ambient listening mode feels remarkably natural. Audio quality is impeccable—whether you’re listening to intricate classical pieces or an action-packed movie, these headphones handle it all."
The previous-generation Sony XM4 was already an outstanding pair, but the XM5 brings key upgrades in noise cancellation and comfort. The XM5 includes a second processor and double the number of microphones dedicated to filtering ambient noise. The earcups have been redesigned for a tighter fit, improving passive noise isolation. Active noise cancellation now rivals top-tier models like the Bose QuietComfort Ultra and Apple AirPods Max.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 also features a sleeker redesign with a revised headband adjustment. The band is wider for better weight distribution, and the earcup padding is now made of a soft, premium synthetic leather that enhances long-term comfort. You can wear these headphones for hours without fatigue. One small downside: the XM5 can no longer be folded inward—only swiveled—making it less compact.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 retains the XM4’s excellent battery life, offering over 30 hours on a single charge even with ANC enabled. It also supports fast charging via USB Type-C.
What's improved on the new WH-1000XM6 headphone?
The Sony WH-1000XM6 was released earlier this year after a three-year upgrade gap. Both sound quality and noise cancellation have been enhanced thanks to a new QN3 audio processor and a total of 12 microphones—including six beam-forming mics—that deliver superior noise rejection. The XM6 is also more portable than the XM5, as the earcups fold inward and fit into a smaller carrying case.
