Take-Two Boss Unconcerned by Plummeting PS5 and Xbox Sales, Insists GTA 6 Will Cause 'A Meaningful Uptick in Console Sales' in 2025

The much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for a fall 2025 release, but it will be exclusive to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S at launch, leaving PC gamers out in the cold. This decision aligns with Rockstar Games' traditional release strategy, yet in today's gaming landscape, it feels somewhat outdated. With the PC platform becoming increasingly vital for the success of multiplatform games, the absence of a PC version at launch raises questions about whether this is a missed opportunity or even a strategic error.

In a recent interview with IGN, Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick hinted at an eventual PC release for GTA 6. He referenced the simultaneous launch of Civilization 7 across multiple platforms but noted that Rockstar typically rolls out its games on different platforms sequentially. This approach has been a point of contention among fans, especially given Rockstar's historical challenges with PC releases and the modding community.

While major Rockstar titles do eventually make their way to PC, the wait can be significant. Given the planned 2025 release for consoles, PC gamers might not see GTA 6 until 2026 at the earliest. This delay could be a significant oversight, considering Zelnick's revelation that PC versions can account for up to 40% of a game's total sales, and sometimes even more.

The current console market is experiencing a downturn in sales for the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S, with no immediate next-gen consoles announced by Sony or Microsoft. Zelnick emphasized the growing importance of the PC market, suggesting that this trend is likely to continue. He also predicted that the release of GTA 6 could spur a resurgence in console sales as fans rush to experience the game on the latest hardware.

Speculation is rife about the potential impact of GTA 6 on console sales, with some enthusiasts dubbing the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro as the ultimate 'GTA 6 machine.' However, tech experts caution that even the PS5 Pro might not be capable of running GTA 6 at 4K60, which could influence gamers' decisions on whether to invest in new hardware just for this title.

In summary, while Grand Theft Auto 6's initial exclusion from the PC platform may align with Rockstar's historical strategy, it could represent a missed opportunity in the evolving gaming market. The eventual PC release, whenever it happens, will be crucial for maximizing the game's reach and revenue, especially as the industry continues to shift towards a more PC-centric future.
