If you’re a gamer, you've likely encountered the challenge of playing vertical arcade games on your phone and found the experience less than ideal. A modder named Max Kern has developed a new Tate mode mini controller aimed at solving this issue. But does it truly address the problem?
Traditional controllers are designed for landscape mode, similar to those used on a Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, many classic vertical shooters and retro games require you to hold your phone in portrait mode, akin to scrolling through Instagram.
Max Kern took on this challenge by creating a compact USB-C gamepad specifically for portrait-mode gaming, known as Tate mode. This controller connects directly to your phone’s USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or additional batteries.
The Tate Mode mini controller is powered by a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, with its case and buttons 3D-printed through JLCPCB. Max has shared a comprehensive tutorial on his YouTube channel, allowing enthusiasts to replicate the design.

What’s Your Opinion on This Tate Mode Mini Controller?
Utilizing the GP2040-CE firmware, the controller functions as a standard HID device, making it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. This versatility is impressive for such a small setup.
However, there are concerns about the strain it may put on the USB-C port, as the gamepad partially supports the phone's weight. This could lead to potential bending of the connector over time, necessitating support for both the phone and the controller during use.
On Reddit, opinions are split. Some users admire the innovation but worry about potential hand cramps, while others find the design acceptable.
It's important to note that this is more of a DIY project than a commercial product. Max has made the firmware and 3D print files available on Thingiverse and Github. What are your thoughts on this innovative tiny gamepad? Share your comments below!
