New Director Set for Live-Action Street Fighter Film

Author : Benjamin May 01,2025

A new Street Fighter movie has chosen its director, and it's none other than Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the surreal comedy series The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will be steering the ship for this upcoming film adaptation, brought to us by Legendary Entertainment.

Capcom, the creator of the iconic fighting game, is reportedly "deeply involved" in this project. Fans can mark their calendars for the scheduled release date of March 20, 2026.

This marks another attempt to bring the beloved Street Fighter franchise to the big screen, following the memorable 1994 film that featured Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. Despite its critical reception at the time, the movie has since become a cult classic.

While casting details remain under wraps, it's safe to assume that we'll see familiar Street Fighter characters gracing the screen once again.

Originally, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, the duo behind Talk to Me. However, they left the project last summer. Sakurai's involvement hints at a potential shift towards a more absurdist tone, which could be a thrilling direction for fans who appreciate the game's more whimsical elements.

In the meantime, fans can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. For a deeper look, check out our comprehensive review of Street Fighter 6 [ttpp].
