Tong-Its is a captivating game designed for three players, utilizing a standard 52-card Anglo-American deck, sans jokers. The card hierarchy within each suit ranks from Ace (1 point) to King (10 points), with numbered cards counting as their face value. Jacks, Queens, and Kings each hold a value of 10 points.
**Objective**
The aim of Tong-Its is to form sets and runs through drawing and discarding, all while minimizing the count of unmatched cards in your hand. A run is defined as three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., ♥4, ♥5, ♥6 or ♠8, ♠9, ♠10, ♠J), noting that A-K-Q does not constitute a run due to the low value of aces. A set, on the other hand, comprises three or four cards of identical rank (e.g., ♥7, ♣7, ♦7). Importantly, a card can only be part of one combination at a time.
**The Deal**
The initial dealer is selected randomly, and subsequent dealers are the winners of the previous rounds. Cards are dealt counterclockwise, starting with the dealer who receives thirteen cards, while the other players get twelve each. The remaining cards form the stock, placed face down.
**The Play**
Each turn in Tongits involves:
- **Draw**: Start by taking a card from either the top of the stock or the discard pile. You can only take from the discard pile if it allows you to form a meld (set or run), which you must then expose.
- **Exposing Melds**: You have the option to reveal any valid melds (sets or runs) from your hand. Melding is not mandatory if drawing from the stock, and in-hand melds do not count against you at the end. To open your hand, you must lay at least one meld. If you can form a set of four without using a card from the discard pile, you can lay it down face down to keep it secret and retain bonus payments.
- **Laying off (sapaw)**: Optionally, add cards to existing melds on the table, whether yours or another player's. There’s no limit to the number of cards you can lay off in a turn, and you don’t need an opened hand to do this. Laying off on another player's meld blocks them from drawing from the discard pile on their next turn.
- **Discard**: Conclude your turn by discarding a card from your hand onto the discard pile, face up.
