Sony Announces Optional PSN Accounts for Some PC Game Ports

PSN Accounts for Playstation's PC Ports No Longer Required (For Some Games)

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a significant change to its PC port strategy. Starting after the January 30, 2025 release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC, PSN accounts will become optional for several PlayStation 5 titles ported to the platform. This decision follows considerable player feedback regarding previous requirements.

Games Affected by the Change:

The change affects several high-profile titles, including Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and the upcoming PC release of The Last of Us Part II Remastered in April 2025. However, it's important to note that other single-player PC ports, such as Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and Until Dawn, will still require PSN accounts.

Incentives for PSN Account Holders:

While PSN accounts are no longer mandatory, Sony is incentivizing players who choose to link their accounts. Benefits include:

  • Trophies: Unlock and track in-game achievements.
  • Friend Management: Connect and play with friends on the PlayStation Network.
  • Exclusive In-Game Bonuses: These vary by game:
    • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Early unlock of the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit.
    • God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Armor of the Black Bear set and a resource bundle (500 Hacksilver and 250 XP).
    • The Last of Us Part II Remastered: 50 bonus points, Ellie skin (Jordan’s Jacket).
    • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Access to the Nora Valiant outfit.

Sony has indicated that further incentives may be added in the future.

Addressing Past Backlash:

This policy shift comes after significant criticism regarding past requirements. The mandatory PSN account linking for Helldivers 2 led to its delisting in numerous countries lacking PSN support, resulting in widespread negative feedback. Similar issues arose with God of War Ragnarök's PC port. Sony's statement suggests they are adapting their approach based on player feedback.

The limited geographical availability of PSN remains a concern, impacting players in regions where PSN is not supported. This change represents a move towards greater accessibility for PC players globally.
