Phỏm (Ta La) - Tien Len Online is a game deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture, especially popular among players from the northern regions. Known by different names across the country—Phom in the North and Ta La in the South—this classic card game combines strategy, luck, and sharp decision-making skills. Played with a standard 52-card deck, Phom brings people together during family gatherings, festivals, and holidays, making it a staple of traditional Vietnamese entertainment.
Key Terms in Phom / Ta La
- Phom: A valid set consisting of either three or more consecutive cards of the same suit or three cards of the same rank.
- Junk Cards: Cards that do not form part of any phom and remain in a player's hand.
- Ù (Winning): Achieved when a player has formed exactly three phoms with no junk cards left—this results in an automatic win.
- Bụng (Stomach): The pile of undealt cards placed face-down in the center of the table after distribution.
- Móm: When a player cannot form any phom during the final round; this results in a penalty.
- Ăn Chốt (Taking the Pin): Occurs when a player picks up the last discarded card (chốt).
- Gửi (Send): If a player discards a card that can be added to another player’s existing phom, the discard can be "sent" and will not count toward the sender’s score at the end.
- Chống (Compensation): Triggered when a player takes the chốt and someone else wins immediately afterward. In such cases, the player who took the chốt must compensate other players. Additional compensation may also apply if a player collects three consecutive cards.
- Re: If a player plays a card and another player uses it to complete a phom, the original player gets an extra turn.
How to Play Phom – Ta La
- Number of Players: Minimum 2, maximum 4.
- Card Distribution: Each player receives 9 cards. The first player (usually the dealer or previous winner) receives 10 cards.
- Gameplay Flow: The game proceeds counter-clockwise starting from the player with 10 cards.
Turn Mechanics:
- The first player discards any card.
- The next player may either take the card if it completes or contributes to a phom, or pick a card from the stomach.
- After drawing or taking a card, the current player then discards one card.
- This continues until someone achieves Ù or until all four rounds are completed without a win.
End of Game Conditions:
- The game ends when a player declares Ù.
- If no player achieves Ù after four rounds, the game ends and points from remaining junk cards are tallied to determine the winner.
Final Scoring Rules:
- Card values: A = 1 point, J = 11, Q = 12, K = 13. Number cards retain their face value.
- Lowest total junk card value wins.
- In case of a tie, the player who finishes playing first is declared the winner.
Point Calculation System:
- Winner: +6 points
- Second Place: -1 point
- Third Place: -2 points
- Last Place: -3 points
- Player who got the pin: -4 points
- Player who took the pin: +4 points
- Player who achieved Ù: +15 points (each opponent loses 5 points)
- Móm player: Loses 4 points to the winner
