Hnefatafl is a historic Scandinavian board game whose versions were popular throughout medieval Europe long before chess emerged. In these Tafl games, two uneven armies clash. The invading black forces aim to capture the white king, while the defending white troops strive to protect their monarch and secure his escape.
Often known as the Viking Game, Hnefatafl brings tales to life—such as the Swedish resistance against Muscovite invaders or Viking raids across Britain. Yet regardless of the legend, one element remains unchanged: the relentless pursuit of the king.
Though the rules are simple, the gameplay offers deep tactical variety. Plan several moves ahead, encircle enemy pieces, set clever traps, and push opponents to surrender. Will you seize the king for wealth and fame? Or will the loyal defenders withstand the assault and ensure their king’s freedom?
