The writer of the Wesley Snipes Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his readiness to step in and help resolve the ongoing challenges facing Mahershala Ali's stalled Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) reboot of Blade. Despite the excitement surrounding the project's announcement at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, the film has faced numerous setbacks, leaving fans disappointed and uncertain about its future.
Recent updates from key figures involved in the project paint a grim picture. Rapper and artist Flying Lotus, who was initially set to compose music for the film, took to X / Twitter to confirm that the project had fallen through. "I guess we are so far from it even being a possibility now but. Yeah I was signed on to write music for the new BLADE movie before it fell thru," he stated, expressing doubt about its revival. Just a day before, acclaimed costume designer Ruth E. Carter revealed on The John Campea Show that she was lined up to design costumes for a 1920s-set Blade, highlighting the creative potential that was lost when production collapsed.
Actor Delroy Lindo, who was set to star alongside Ali, shared his disappointment with Entertainment Weekly, recounting how Marvel initially seemed keen on his input and the inclusive approach they planned. "And then, for whatever reason, it just went off the rails," Lindo lamented, reflecting on the project's derailment.
The film has seen a revolving door of directors, with neither Yann Demange nor Bassam Tariq managing to stay on board. In an interview with ScreenRant, Goyer expressed his confusion and eagerness to contribute, saying, "I would... I’ve always loved the character and I love him. I’ve been sitting on the sidelines wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?’ Because I’m a huge Marvel fan myself, and I’ve just been totally puzzled."
Despite being removed from Marvel's release schedule seven months ago, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige remains committed to bringing Blade to the MCU. In an interview with Omelete in November 2024, Feige emphasized their dedication to the character and Mahershala Ali's interpretation of him, assuring fans that they would be kept informed about any developments.
Meanwhile, the success of MCU's Deadpool & Wolverine, which featured a cameo by Wesley Snipes as Blade and grossed $1.3 billion globally, has reignited interest in the character. Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, praised Snipes' contribution to the superhero genre, stating on X/Twitter, "There is no Fox Marvel Universe or MCU without Blade first creating a market... He’s Marvel Daddy. Please retweet for a Logan-like send-off."
Reynolds is also reportedly in the early stages of developing a Deadpool and X-Men movie, where Deadpool would not be the central character but would share the spotlight with other X-Men figures, allowing them to be "used in unexpected ways," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
