Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is set to revolutionize the franchise with its upcoming VR version, slated for release this Spring 2025. Dive into the details about the features and updates of Civ 7 VR and the broader Civilization 7 experience.
Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) is making a bold leap into virtual and mixed reality, exclusively available on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S platforms. Announced on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event, this marks the franchise's first foray into VR and MR gaming, courtesy of 2K Games and Firaxis Games.
Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk expressed his enthusiasm in a blog post on the 2K website, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, shared his optimism about the partnership, saying, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
Notably, while Civ 7 will be available on PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not launch on PSVR2.
Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR immerses players in a Command Table environment, allowing them to strategize and interact with the game world as if it were a living, breathing board game. Players can view the world from various heights or zoom in to inspect the intricate details of buildings and units. The game supports both virtual and mixed reality, enabling seamless transitions between modes. In VR, players find themselves in an ornate museum overlooking a personalized vista of their civilization; in MR, the Command Table integrates with the player's physical surroundings.
Civ 7 VR offers diverse gameplay options, including single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes. Up to four players with Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets can participate, either teaming up against AI opponents or competing against each other. During matches, players can see their friends and opponents across the Command Table, represented as their chosen world leaders. A 2K Account and a Meta Account are required for online multiplayer.
Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback
Firaxis Games has actively responded to feedback gathered during Civ 7’s early access period. Following its Advanced Access launch on February 6, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Edition purchasers, the game received mixed reviews on Steam, with players highlighting issues with the User Interface, particularly in accessing crucial gameplay information.
In response, Firaxis Games committed to improving the UI, focusing on making interactions more intuitive, enhancing map readability, and addressing formatting and polish. They also plan to incorporate community-requested features such as team-based multiplayer, a broader range of map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, aiming to refine UI adjustments, balance and improve AI, adjust diplomacy and crises, and fix additional bugs.
Civilization 7 VR is anticipated to launch in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with no specific date announced yet. Meanwhile, the standard version of Civilization 7 is currently in early access and is set for a worldwide release on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
