Long before Fortnite became a global battle royale sensation, it first launched as a PVE cooperative shooter. This original mode, now known as Save the World, allowed players to team up and fend off hordes of zombies in increasingly challenging waves. Now, Fortnite is revisiting its cooperative roots with the introduction of *Lego Fortnite Expeditions*, a brand-new mission-based PVE experience designed for up to four players. The mode blends the familiar Lego aesthetic with gameplay mechanics reminiscent of the popular PlayStation title *Helldivers*, offering a fresh yet nostalgic twist on Fortnite's evolving formula.
How Lego Fortnite Expeditions Works
In *Expeditions*, players begin their journey at the Academy hub, where they can select from a variety of combat missions set across three distinct locations. Completing these missions contributes to global Team Projects that provide universal buffs to all players, while also unlocking new mission types and content. When not out in the field, players can return to the safety of the Academy and take on Assignments given by other recognizable Fortnite characters, adding depth to the world-building and storytelling aspects of the mode.
Three Unique Hero Classes
At launch, *Expeditions* introduces three map-specific hero classes, each with upgradeable abilities:
- Shadow Caller: Grants the ability to fly and unleash ranged explosive attacks. Players can also activate Shadow Form to evade enemies or disengage from combat.
- Hunter: Armed with the Bull's-eye Blade, this class enhances damage output and improves accuracy for all teammates once a target is marked.
- Rift Ripper: Offers battlefield mobility through warping, the ability to fire rift crystals, and class-specific buffs that support fellow players.
A Permanent Addition to Fortnite
Epic Games has positioned *Expeditions* as a permanent addition to Fortnite, making it the third major Lego-themed experience following *Lego Fortnite Odyssey* and *Lego Brick Life*. While those earlier modes remained largely independent, *Expeditions* integrates directly with the overarching Battle Royale storyline, sharing its theme and featuring the same central villain. This alignment reinforces Fortnite’s evolving narrative structure and ensures continuity across its various gameplay modes.
Mask Maker Daigo and Battle Royale Crossovers
Upon launch, players will face off against the antagonist Mask Maker Daigo and his minions, while forming alliances with iconic Battle Royale heroes such as Jonesy and Hope. A recently released trailer also teases the inclusion of the current season’s visual identity, including its Super emblem and the highly anticipated Superman crossover character. This hints at the potential for future seasons of *Expeditions* to align with and evolve alongside Battle Royale's seasonal themes.
New Season, New Modes
Fortnite is currently deep into its latest superhero-themed season, which followed the dramatic destruction of the Star Wars Death Star. This week brings additional excitement with the release of *Blitz Royale*, a fast-paced 32-player battle royale format tailored for quick sessions—especially on mobile devices.
Both *Blitz Royale* and *Lego Fortnite Expeditions* officially launch tomorrow, June 18, giving players more ways than ever to engage with Fortnite’s expanding universe.
