Core Boxes
Each core box of Monster Hunter World: The Board Game is a standalone experience, featuring four hunters and four monsters. These boxes can be combined, allowing you to mix and match characters and monsters from different sets. While most components are unique to each box, some items are shared across sets, and additional cards are included for combined play.
Starting with a single core box is recommended for newcomers. If you find yourself drawn deeper into the game, consider adding smaller expansions before investing in a second core set. Both core sets offer the same high-quality gameplay and components, including stunning monster miniatures that dwarf the hunters, enhancing the game's immersive feel. Choose the set that resonates most with you, perhaps based on aesthetic appeal or nostalgia from the video game series.

The monsters, inspired by dinosaurs and tropical creatures, include the lizard-like Great Jagras, the furred and scaled Tobi-Kadachi, the fearsome Anjanath, and the majestic dragon Rathalos. Hunters in this set wield classic weapons: Great Sword, Sword and Shield, Dual Blades, and Bow.

The monsters you'll face include the armored Barroth, the monstrous swamp-fish Jyuratodus, the bird-like Pukei-Pukei, and the underground behemoth Diablos. Hunters here use more exotic weapons: Charge Blade, Switch Axe, Heavy Bowgun, and Insect Glaive.
Retail Expansions
Alongside the core boxes, several expansions were available for pre-order during the game's Kickstarter campaign, with most still available at retail. Note that the Nergigante expansion is rare, and the Teostra expansion is exclusive to Steamforged Games.
Nergigante, Kushala Daora, and Teostra are Elder Dragons, adding new, tougher quests and a higher difficulty level to your game. These expansions also include larger miniatures, offering an ultimate boss challenge to extend your campaign.
While these expansions are tempting, they are costly and some features are specific to one core box or the other. For example, the Kushala Daora expansion includes special crafting weapons for hunters from both core sets. Thus, acquiring the second core box might be the best way to enhance your game before diving into these expansions.

### Monster Hunter World Iceborne: The Board Game
0See it at GamefoundBuilding on the success of the original game, Steamforged Games launched a Kickstarter for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. While it shares core mechanics with the original, it introduces new concepts and is only partially compatible with the previous boxes. You can transfer monsters and hunters between sets for arena games, but not for campaigns.
The Iceborne content features a single core box, Hoarfrost Reach, with four new monsters and four hunters.
