MultiVersus to Shut Down Post-5th Season

Author : Aria Jun 19,2025

MultiVersus, the free-to-play crossover fighting game developed by Player First Games and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, will be coming to an end after its fifth season. According to an official announcement made on January 31, 2025 via the game’s Twitter (X) account and blog post, Season 5 will be the final season of MultiVersus, running from February 4, 2025, until the game officially shuts down on May 30, 2025.

Multiversus Season 5: Final Season Details

The upcoming Season 5 of MultiVersus will introduce two brand-new playable characters—Aquaman from DC Comics and Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes. Both characters, along with all other Season 5 content, will be available through in-game progression, ensuring that every player has a fair chance to unlock them. This marks the final wave of new content for the game, as no further updates or seasons are planned beyond this point.

Following the conclusion of Season 5, MultiVersus will no longer be available for download on PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store. However, players who download the game before May 30, 2025, will still have access to an offline mode that allows gameplay without an internet connection.

Offline Mode Availability Post-Shutdown

MultiVersus Offline Mode After Shutdown

Once Season 5 ends, players will be able to enjoy MultiVersus offline via local gameplay. This includes solo play against AI opponents or multiplayer sessions with up to three friends. To access this feature, players must download the final version of the game during Season 5 (from February 4 at 9 AM PST to May 30 at 9 AM PDT).

Upon logging in for the first time after downloading, the game will generate a local save file linked to the user's PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account. This ensures that all earned and purchased content remains accessible in offline mode indefinitely.

It’s also important to note that real-money transactions were discontinued as of January 31, 2025. Gleamium, the game’s premium currency, is no longer available for purchase. Players who still have Gleamium in their accounts can continue using it until the end of Season 5.

A Look Back at MultiVersus’ Journey

MultiVersus Beta Launch in 2022

MultiVersus launched its public beta in July 2022, offering fans a fresh take on the platform fighter genre. Often compared to Super Smash Bros., the game distinguished itself with a unique 2v2 team-based combat system and deep roster of beloved characters from various franchises.

During its initial beta phase—from July 2022 to June 2023—the game received multiple updates and introduced two full seasons of content. After a brief hiatus, MultiVersus returned in May 2024 with a revamped experience featuring rollback netcode, new characters, PvE modes, updated currencies, and more.

Despite these improvements, the game faced continued criticism over technical performance, frequent disconnections, and concerns around microtransactions. By July 2024, reports indicated a significant drop in player numbers—nearly 70% decline on PlayStation platforms alone.

Farewell Message From the Developers

On May 30, 2025, at 9 AM PDT, MultiVersus will officially shut down servers, marking the end of its journey. At the time of shutdown, the game will feature a total of 35 playable characters spanning multiple universes—from DC superheroes to WB animated icons.

In a heartfelt message, Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed their gratitude to the MultiVersus community: "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."

Players can currently download and play MultiVersus on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Make sure to grab your copy before May 30, 2025, if you want to preserve access to offline gameplay and your in-game progress.
