NBC Exec Reveals Why They Canceled Suits LA: 'We Had To Make Some Hard Decisions'

*Suits* has long been a beloved show, captivating audiences since its debut on USA in 2011. Its recent availability on Netflix sparked a significant revival, leading to countless binge-watching sessions. However, the momentum wasn't enough to sustain the new spin-off, *Suits LA*, which NBC canceled after just one season as part of their fall schedule announcement. Jeff Bader, the president of program planning strategy at NBC, shed light on the decision behind pulling the plug on the series.

"It's a challenging task to determine which shows to renew," Bader shared with Variety after the fall schedule was released. "Suits LA had a brief run, but it didn't capture audiences the way we anticipated. There are numerous reasons speculated for its lack of resonance, but ultimately, it's not demonstrating the growth potential we need for the future."

Bader elaborated on the criteria used for making such tough calls: "We had to analyze the performance of our shows across both traditional and digital platforms. We needed to identify which ones showed promise for future growth. This involved assessing stability in linear viewership, digital engagement, and overall trends—whether they were on the rise or decline. Unfortunately, some hard decisions had to be made."

He also mentioned that NBCUniversal considers the potential for transferring shows to Peacock when they are canceled from the network lineup. However, *Suits LA* did not make the cut for a move to the streaming service.

Regarding the shows that managed to stay on the schedule, Bader explained the factors that played a role in their favor, especially with the need to accommodate more sports programming due to the NBA taking over Tuesday nights. "We evaluated their performance on a week-to-week and episode-to-episode basis, across both linear and digital platforms, to understand which shows had the strongest ratings trajectory," Bader noted. "On the creative side, our teams similarly assessed which shows had the greatest potential to attract new audiences. These considerations led us to retain the top-performing shows."

*Suits* originally aired for nine seasons from 2011 to 2019. The revival series, *Suits LA*, premiered in February and featured stars like Stephen Amell, Lex Scott Davis, Josh McDermitt, and Bryan Greenberg. Notable original cast members such as Rick Hoffman, David Costabile, and Gabriel Macht also made guest appearances. Aaron Korsh, the creator of the original *Suits*, also served as the creator and executive producer of the spinoff. The final episode of *Suits LA* aired on May 11, 2025.
