Nintendo Switch 2 Tariff Delays Pre-Orders in Canada

Author : Gabriel Apr 16,2025

Gamers were hit with a wave of disappointment last week when the Nintendo Switch 2 preorder date shifted from April 9 to an indefinite "who knows when?" This change was triggered by new import tariffs introduced by President Trump, which caused financial markets to tumble. The ripple effect of these tariffs has crossed the border, with Nintendo Canada confirming that preorders are also delayed in Canada, dashing hopes of securing a console through relatives in Winnipeg.

"Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025, in order to align with the timing of pre-orders to be determined in the U.S.," Nintendo of Canada stated to the Canadian tech site MobileSyrup.

"Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged."

Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start on April 9, 2025, to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update the timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged.

Despite the original preorder launch date looming tomorrow, there's still no clarity on when gamers can start refreshing their browsers and checking their credit card details, leaving the gaming community in a state of uncertainty and worried about potential price hikes from the initially announced $449.99.

Meanwhile, in other regions, Nintendo Switch 2 preorders have gone live in the UK today. Smaller retailers like EE, GAME, and Smyths have seen their stocks sell out quickly, with scalpers already listing preorders on eBay for £500 ($639) or more, significantly higher than the retail price of £395.99 ($506).
