In the cinematic universe of superheroes, every hero needs a formidable adversary. For "Captain America: Brave New World," that villain is The Leader, portrayed by actor Tim Blake Nelson. The character, known for his mutations, was brought to life through practical effects and makeup, although the final design diverged from the comic book version.
Blue Whale Studios, the Atlanta-based special effects company responsible for The Leader's design and effects in the MCU film, recently shared insights into their original vision for Sam Sterns’ alter ego. Their initial concept was much closer to the comic book depiction, featuring an engorged head and pale green skin. This design, while straightforward, lacked the detailed mutations seen in the final film. The studio also provided a glimpse into their process by sharing a video on Instagram of the prosthetics being applied to Nelson.
"We were originally brought on to design and apply the practical makeup for The Leader on the incomparable Tim Blake Nelson in Captain America: Brave New World," Blue Whale Studios stated. "As often happens in film, the story evolved, and during reshoots, the creative direction shifted. Our version was ultimately not used in the final cut. Still, we remain incredibly proud of the work we created."
The studio drew inspiration from the original comic book art, aiming to create a look that was both grounded and iconic. They emphasized achieving a refined, natural realism while ensuring the makeup was lightweight and comfortable for Nelson, thanks to the dedication of their team.
The original design closely resembled The Leader's first appearance in the Marvel comic universe, introduced in 1964's Tales to Astonish #62. However, the final design in "Brave New World" aligns more with the character's recent portrayal in 2018's Immortal Hulk.
The Leader's journey to becoming a villain in the MCU began in 2008's "The Incredible Hulk," where Sam Sterns was exposed to Bruce Banner's Gamma radiation-infused blood. This event set the stage for his transformation, which is fully realized at the start of "Brave New World."
Last May, it was reported that "Captain America: Brave New World" underwent reshoots to introduce a new villainous character, Sidewinder, played by Giancarlo Esposito, known for his roles in "Breaking Bad," "Star Wars," and "The Boys." Additionally, five-time WWE world champion Seth Rollins confirmed that his role was cut following extensive rewrites and reshoots of the script.
