Steam Player Count Soars After Patch 8 Release
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has capped off its remarkable journey with the release of Patch 8, the game's final major update, on April 15, 2025. Following the update, BG3 experienced a notable increase in player numbers, climbing from around 60,000 concurrent players to over 169,000, positioning it just outside of Steam's top 10 most played games.
Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, took to Twitter (X) on April 22 to highlight the surge in players post-Patch 8. He emphasized the thriving mod support as a key factor, allowing the studio to shift focus towards their next ambitious project. It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will be moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative territories.
In light of this, D&D's owner, Wizards of the Coast, along with Hasbro, will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently in discussions with other studios to potentially develop a Baldur’s Gate 4.
12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!
Patch 8, announced back in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been eagerly anticipated by the community. This update introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and a host of other features. Larian Studios provided a comprehensive breakdown of the patch's contents on the BG3 website, which includes an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring a polished final experience.
Larian Studios has gone above and beyond to enhance BG3, as evidenced by the numerous updates and fixes included in this final patch. While this marks their last major update, the studio remains committed to supporting the game's modding community.
