Nintendo has enlisted actor Paul Rudd to generate excitement for the Nintendo Switch 2 in a new commercial that playfully nods to a memorable 90s ad he starred in for the Super Nintendo. The original 1991 commercial featured Rudd sporting a long black jacket, a beaded necklace, and an eye-catching hairstyle as he approached a drive-in movie theater, Super Nintendo in hand. He connected the console to the big screen, captivating the crowd with games like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, F-Zero, and Sim City. The iconic slogan "Now you're playing with power" capped off the ad.

Fast forward 34 years, and Rudd, looking remarkably unchanged, reprises his role in the Nintendo Switch 2 commercial. Dressed in the same coat, necklace, and hairstyle, he enters a living room to set up the new console. Joined by comedians Joe Lo Truglio and Jordan Carlos, along with a child who calls him "Uncle Paul," they dive into a game of Mario Kart World, utilizing the system's innovative GameChat feature. The ad humorously acknowledges the original's dramatic flair with a fog machine and fan, creating a nostalgic yet amusing atmosphere. It concludes with Rudd updating the slogan to "Now we're playing together," embracing the communal aspect of modern gaming. The commercial's cheesy charm and self-awareness make for an endearing tribute to the original.
IGN had the opportunity to interview Rudd about his experience filming the sequel to his 90s Nintendo commercial. During the interview, Rudd shared that he likely wore his own beaded necklace in the original ad and continued playing Mario Kart World on set during breaks. However, he humorously noted that he wasn't allowed to take a Nintendo Switch 2 home. You can watch the full interview here:
