In the vast world of Project Zomboid, traversing the map on foot is a daunting task. Fortunately, many vehicles remain functional, and if keys are elusive, hotwiring offers a solution. This process is simpler than it seems, requiring only a few button presses, but some prerequisites must be met. While not demanding a top-tier character build, these requirements are crucial for successful vehicle acquisition.
Hotwiring in Project Zomboid: A Simple Guide
Successfully hotwiring a car allows you to drive it as long as it has fuel and is in good condition, bypassing the need for keys. However, you need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar profession during character creation eliminates this skill requirement.
Hotwiring Steps:
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle's radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait.
After fulfilling the prerequisites, these three steps will hotwire any operable vehicle. The hotwiring itself is automated; once complete, press W to start the engine. Remember, fuel is not guaranteed, so securing gasoline is advisable.
Skill Progression:
For those not starting as a Burglar, Electrical and Mechanics skills can be leveled through in-game activities:
- Electrical: Dismantle electronics (watches, radios, TVs).
- Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.
Books and magazines also provide skill boosts. These are commonly found in homes, shops, mailboxes, sheds, and on bookshelves. Project Zomboid server admins can directly grant skill XP using the "/addxp" command (syntax displayed in the chat box).
Remember to use a screwdriver or appropriate tool for dismantling and installation. Vehicle parts can be removed by right-clicking and selecting "Vehicle Mechanics."
