Ryan Reynolds recently revealed on The Box Office Podcast that he pitched an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney. While it's unclear whether Disney has accepted the pitch or if the project would be a movie or TV show, Reynolds shared his vision for it, emphasizing that an R-rating could serve as a "Trojan Horse for emotion" rather than just being vulgar.
Reynolds, known for his success with R-rated films like Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine—the latter being the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever with over $1.3 billion in earnings (according to Box Office Mojo)—believes that an R-rated Star Wars project could work well. However, he clarified that he wouldn't want to star in such a project, stating, "I’m not saying I would want to be in it; that would be a bad fit," but he would be interested in producing and writing, or contributing behind the scenes.
Reynolds highlighted the potential of Star Wars to surprise audiences despite the constant stream of content on Disney+. He noted, "Those kinds of IP subsist really well on scarcity and surprise. We don’t get scarcity, really, with Star Wars because there’s Disney+, but you can certainly still surprise people."
While Reynolds continues his work with Marvel, including pushing for a Deadpool and X-Men movie, the R-rated Star Wars project might take some time to materialize. In the meantime, Disney is expanding the Star Wars universe with projects like Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy, who often collaborates with Reynolds, and starring Ryan Gosling.
