In Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, the main story quest "Necessary Evil" presents players with some of the game's most challenging moral decisions. Here's a detailed guide on navigating this quest, including whether you should side with Semine or Hashek.
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Necessary Evil Quest Walkthrough
After completing the "Back in the Saddle" quest, you'll unlock "Necessary Evil." In this quest, von Bergow assigns Hans and Henry to gather intelligence from Nebakov Fortress and interrogate a prisoner. The interrogation's outcome is crucial as it will decide whether von Bergow targets Semine or Nebakov Fortress. This walkthrough focuses on the choice to target Semine, where the moral dilemmas are most intense.
Prisoner Interrogation Answers
During the prisoner interrogation, you'll encounter several Speech checks. You can either use your Speech skills to persuade or resort to torture to extract information. Here are the Speech options and their requirements:
- "We’ll put in a good word for you." (20 Impression)
- "Istvan and I are old acquaintances." (20 Impression)
- "Otherwise, it’ll end badly for you." (17 Intimidation)
Post-interrogation, you'll uncover the identity of the bandit leader and Semine's involvement. When reporting back to von Bergow, you can either inform him of Young Semine's collaboration with the bandits, leading to an attack on the town, or claim that no one locally aided the bandits, resulting in an attack on Nebakov.
Should You Attack Semine or Nebakov?
Choosing to attack Semine involves traveling with the party and making further tough decisions regarding Hashek. Opting for Nebakov allows von Bergow to handle the bandits directly, concluding the quest immediately. While attacking Nebakov might be preferable to avoid bloodshed in Semine, morally, it's problematic to let Semine off the hook given their role in the deaths of innocents. Personally, I chose to attack Semine, feeling it was the right course of action despite having formed connections with the townsfolk earlier in the game.
Remember, if you choose Semine, you must ride with the party; otherwise, the town will be massacred. Accompanying them gives you a chance to mitigate the damage.
Should You Side With Semine or Hashek?
Before setting out, you'll have a conversation with Hashek, who clearly seeks vengeance on Semine through the most violent means possible. Upon arrival, you'll decide whether to align with Semine or Hashek. To support Hashek, choose the dialogue option "Hashek is right." To back Semine, opt for "Olda deserves a trial."
I recommend siding with Semine. While they were wrong to aid the bandits, Hashek's desire to raze everything would lead to further innocent casualties. As I played Henry as a morally upright character, it made sense for him to oppose Hashek's destructive intentions.
After defeating Hashek, advise the Semines to burn their estate and flee, which will advance the quest and lead to your next objective of informing von Bergow.
Note that siding with Hashek results in the town's complete destruction. You'll also encounter Olda in the tower, where you can decide his fate—either spare him or hand him over to Hashek.
Should You Tell von Bergow or Let Hans Talk?
The final part of the quest involves reporting back to von Bergow. You can choose to stay silent and let Hans handle the conversation or speak up about what happened at Semine.
I suggest remaining silent and allowing Hans to talk. Hans is more diplomatic, which keeps both him and Henry in von Bergow's favor. This leads to von Bergow planning his next move against Nebakov.
