If you're eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie, you're not alone. The director, known for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine, is still actively involved in the project, and we have a reassuring update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper.
"I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant about the future film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
While the movie remains largely shrouded in mystery, we do know it will be set after The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has clarified its place in the timeline, stating, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
In the same interview with Deadline, Kennedy confirmed that Levy's movie will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film.
Tropper's optimistic words suggest that progress is being made on Levy's project. However, fans will need to exercise patience, as the film is not expected to hit theaters until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.
Disney has not released a Star Wars film since the controversial Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. In the interim, several planned films were canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Moreover, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's release calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new Star Wars feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, with reports indicating she will appear in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.
Disney's Star Wars slate extends beyond these projects. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch.
