Square Enix has officially announced the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link, a decision that might not come as a surprise to many, given their history of game cancellations. The development team, which had been working on the project since 2019, conducted several closed beta tests on both Android and iOS platforms. However, following a delay announcement in November 2024, the team decided to pull the plug.
Why Did Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link Get Cancelled?
The team cited the inability to find a viable path forward that would meet long-term player satisfaction as the primary reason for the cancellation. The game was envisioned as a live-service experience but ultimately fell short of expectations. Missing-Link aimed to be a unique, GPS-based spinoff within the Kingdom Hearts universe, allowing players to explore the world and fight Heartless with their keyblades during a forgotten chapter of the saga. Despite the franchise's global popularity, the innovative concept proved challenging to execute effectively. Square Enix decided it was better to cancel the project rather than release a subpar product.
