However, insurance typically carries a house edge of 2–15%, so it is not recommended unless the deck is rich in tens — such as in single- or double-deck games or when card counting. If the dealer has blackjack, the hand ends; otherwise, players choose from these options:

Stand — Keep the current hand and end the turn.

Hit — Take another card. Players can continue hitting until they reach 21 or bust.

Double — Double the bet and receive one additional card. This ends the turn and is only allowed on two-card hands.

Split — If the first two cards have the same value, they can be split into two separate hands, each with its own bet. Each new hand receives another card. Splitting aces ends the turn after one card per ace; other pairs allow further actions like hitting, standing, or doubling, including the possibility of re-splitting.

Strategy

Despite the many options, optimal blackjack strategy can be straightforward to learn. By following basic strategy charts, players can significantly reduce the house edge.
