DirectX 11 vs. 12: Which Graphics API Reigns Supreme?

Author : Allison Mar 13,2025

Modern games frequently offer both DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 options, and Ready or Not is no exception. This choice can be confusing, especially for less tech-savvy players. While DirectX 12 is newer and *potentially* offers better performance, DirectX 11 is known for its stability. So, which should you choose?

DirectX 11 and DirectX 12: A Simple Explanation

Think of DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 as translators between your computer and the game. They help your GPU render the game's visuals. DirectX 11, being older, is simpler for developers to implement. However, it doesn't fully utilize your CPU and GPU's potential, resulting in potentially lower performance. DirectX 12, on the other hand, is more efficient, better utilizing your system's resources and offering developers more optimization options for improved performance. The trade-off is increased complexity for developers.

DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 for Ready or Not?

The best choice depends on your system's hardware. A modern, high-end system with a graphics card supporting DirectX 12 will likely see performance benefits from choosing DirectX 12. This improved efficiency can lead to higher frame rates, smoother gameplay, and potentially better graphics.

However, DirectX 12 isn't ideal for older systems. On older hardware, it can cause instability and even reduce performance. If you have an older PC, sticking with the more stable DirectX 11 is recommended.

In short: Modern system? Try DirectX 12 for potentially better performance. Older system? Choose DirectX 11 for stability.

Setting Your Rendering Mode in Ready or Not

You'll typically select your rendering mode (DX11 or DX12) when launching the game through Steam. A window should appear prompting you to choose. Select DX12 for newer PCs, and DX11 for older ones.

If this window doesn't appear, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click Ready or Not in your Steam library and select "Properties."
  2. Go to the "General" tab.
  3. In the "Launch Options" field, type either -dx11 or -dx12 depending on your preference.

That's it! Now you're ready to choose the best rendering mode for your Ready or Not experience.

Ready or Not is available now for PC.
