Funcom's updates for Dune: Awakening are arriving at breakneck speed. Just when we covered their Public Test Client and plans to expand the PvE zone from 10% to 50% of the Deep Desert, they've already rolled out the full update for all players starting today, June 26.
"The PvE zone now covers the entire southern half of the Deep Desert," Funcom announced in its latest patch notes. "Players can now explore Imperial Testing Stations and caves without PvP interference. However, Control Points and Shipwrecks remain PvP zones throughout."
Balancing Act Between PvE and PvP
This follows their recent AMA addressing player concerns about endgame content. Previously, some criticized late-game mechanics as overly punishing, even after removing Ornithopter squishing.
"Our goal isn't to force PvE players into unwanted PvP engagements," explained creative director Joel Bylos. "The Deep Desert should maintain tension – that dangerous thrill of navigating Arrakis' deadliest regions – but we're adjusting its balance."
Key Gameplay Changes
- Northern regions offer higher-density resources and remain high-risk PvP zones
- Spice field distribution adjusted (medium fields reduced, small fields increased)
- Rare materials like Plasteel plates now exclusive to PvP zones
- Ornithopter rocket launchers now reduce flight speed (20% for Scouts, 10% Assaults)
Quality-of-Life Improvements
- Sietch visiting restrictions removed – claim land anywhere
- Better crash prevention when exiting airborne Ornithopters
- New player reporting system implemented
The changes arrive as Dune: Awakening enjoys massive success, surpassing 1 million players and becoming Funcom's fastest-selling title. Currently holding 'Very Positive' Steam reviews, it peaked at 189,333 concurrent players earlier this month.
